Niches we've designed covers for
Why most covers underperform
A cover doesn't have to be beautiful.
It has to win a 200-pixel fight.
Your reader meets your cover at thumbnail size, in a grid, beside fifteen competitors, for about a second. Most of what makes a cover “nice” is invisible at that size — and most of what makes it sell is decided long before anyone opens Photoshop.
Generating a cover yourself
One prompt, one look, and no idea whether it matches what buyers in your category already respond to. Warped type, unusable resolution, and a flattened image you can never edit — so the next book in the series starts from scratch again.
Working with KDPChimp
A KDP expert researches your market first. You see dozens of directions before committing to one. The winner is refined with you, rebuilt by hand in proper editable layers, delivered in every format — and we stay with you until it's live on Amazon and rendering correctly.
The process
Six steps. No guesswork.
Niche & competitor research
Your project managerYour project manager is a working KDP publisher who coaches other publishers for a living. Before anything is designed, they study your category and your direct competitors to identify the visual language your ideal readers already associate with the genre — the cues that tell a browsing buyer “this is the book I'm looking for” before they've read a word.
Dozens of concepts, explored with you
Your designerNot two or three safe options. A wide spread of genuinely different directions — imagery, typography, colour, mood — so the expensive decision gets made visually and early, while it's still cheap to change your mind.
You choose, in a proper review app
Your callEvery concept lands in a private review page. Rank your first, second and third choice, comment directly on any concept, tell us to take the typography from one and the artwork from another. No email threads, no numbered screenshots.
Refined until you love it
Your designerWe take the winning direction and sharpen it — composition, hierarchy, thumbnail legibility, the details that decide whether it earns a click. Revisions on your chosen direction are unlimited. We're not counting rounds.
Built by hand, in every format
Your designerYour cover is manually rebuilt in Photoshop: typography matched and reset properly, artwork cleaned, every element separated onto its own layer. Then built out for Kindle, paperback, hardcover and ACX — each to its own trim, with the spine calculated to your exact page count.
KDP upload support
Your project managerWe don't hand you files and disappear. Your project manager walks you through the upload, checks the previewer renders correctly, and sorts out anything it flags — so the cover you approved is the cover that goes live.
What “editable layers” actually means
Your cover arrives in pieces — on purpose.
A flattened JPEG is a dead end. Every cover we build comes apart into its separate elements, each one still fully editable in Photoshop:
- ✎TypographyTitle, subtitle and author name as live, editable text on their own layer.
- ◉VisualCharacters, objects and focal elements cut out cleanly and moveable.
- ▣BackgroundThe full artwork underneath, complete and uncropped.
What that buys you, three books from now
Our framework
Every cover is scored before you ever see it.
“It looks nice” is not a standard. Every concept we put in front of you has been through the same six-point review — the one we developed from studying what actually sells in KDP categories, and the reason you're choosing between good options instead of sorting the good from the broken.
The grayscale test
We strip the colour out. If the cover stops working, it was leaning on colour to do a job that composition and contrast should be doing — and it will fall apart next to a brighter competitor.
The blur / squint test
We blur it until only the strongest shapes survive. Whatever is still legible is what a scrolling buyer actually registers in the second before they decide. If nothing survives, neither does the sale.
And we put it on the shelf beside your competition.
Your cover doesn't get judged on its own. It gets judged in a grid, at thumbnail size, next to the current bestsellers in your category. So that's exactly how we review it — your cover dropped into a simulated Amazon results row beside the books it will actually compete with.
If it doesn't stand out here, it doesn't matter how good it looks at full size.
How you work with us
As hands-on as you want to be. Not a click more.
You get a dedicated project manager who is also a KDP expert, guiding you through the whole process — and a dedicated professional graphic designer at your disposal. That's what lets you choose your own level of involvement: someone who understands your business is already holding the details.
Option A
Take it off my plate
You're publishing at volume and you don't have time to argue with a chatbot about hands, or to run three rounds of revisions fixing errors a designer should have caught. Send the brief and step away — your project manager takes it from there.
- A variety of high-quality covers, checked before you see them
- Optimised for your specific niche and your book's offer
- Nothing reaches you until it's worth your attention
- We handle the KDP upload at the end
Option B
I want to be in the room
You have strong opinions about your cover and you should — it's your book. Work with us directly, comment on every concept, and steer the direction as closely as you like.
- One-on-one with your project manager, not a support queue
- Comment on any concept in your private review page
- Highly responsive — and personalised to how you work
- Unlimited revisions on your chosen direction
Selected work

Questions
Before you order.
How is this different from generating a cover myself?
Three ways. A KDP expert researches your market and competitors first, so the concepts start from what already sells in your category rather than from a prompt. You see dozens of directions and choose, instead of accepting whatever one generation produced. And the result is built manually in fully editable layers, in every format your book needs — not a flattened image you can never change.
What does “unlimited revisions” actually cover?
Once you've picked a direction, we refine it as many times as it takes — typography, colour, imagery, hierarchy — until you're happy. There's no round counter and no upcharge. Deciding you want a completely different direction after we've started building is a conversation rather than an automatic no; we'll tell you honestly what it means for your timeline.
Which formats do I get?
All of them: Kindle, paperback, hardcover and ACX audiobook. Each is a different trim and aspect ratio, and each is built properly rather than stretched from the last one — with the spine calculated to your exact page count. You also get the layered source files, so the design is yours outright.
Do you use AI?
In the exploration stage, yes, and we're open about that — it's why you get dozens of directions instead of three. But nothing ships as a raw AI output. The direction you choose is rebuilt by hand in Photoshop: typography reset properly, artwork cleaned and corrected, every element separated into real layers. If a concept can't be brought to a professional standard, we tell you rather than shipping it.
How do you know a cover will actually work?
We don't guess and we don't put it to a vote in the office. Every concept goes through our six-point review — thumbnail readability, visual hierarchy, imagery and story, genre signalling, composition and spacing, technical correctness — plus the grayscale test and the blur test, which between them tell you whether a cover is carrying its weight or leaning on colour and detail that vanish at browse size. Then we drop it into a simulated Amazon results row beside your actual competitors, because that is the only context in which your buyer will ever see it.
How long does it take?
Concepts typically reach you within a few days of the brief, and the finished files follow once you've chosen a direction and we've worked through revisions. Pace depends mostly on how quickly your feedback comes back — your project manager gives you a schedule for your specific project when it starts.
What if I don't like any of the concepts?
It's rare across dozens of directions, but it happens — and it's usually a sign the brief needs sharpening rather than the design. We'll talk it through and go again on a new direction.
Can you match an existing series?
Yes, and this is where the layered files earn their keep. Send the existing covers and we'll build to the series' typography, palette and layout so the new title sits correctly alongside them on your author page.
Who's actually doing the work?
A small fixed team, not a marketplace. You get a dedicated professional graphic designer who produces every concept for your book and does all the Photoshop finishing by hand — the same person start to finish, not whoever a marketplace assigns this week. And a dedicated project manager who is a working KDP publisher and coaches other publishers; they handle the research, your review page and your KDP upload. Josiah, who founded KDPChimp, has published 100+ books across eight years on KDP.
Why only 10 projects a month?
Because the same designer builds every cover and the same project manager runs every project personally. 10 is what the two of them can do without the quality slipping or your emails going unanswered. When the month is full, we'll tell you the next start date rather than take your money and put you in a queue.
Your book gets one second on the shelf.
Give it a cover researched for its market, chosen by you, and built to keep working for every book that follows.
P.S. — If you're weighing this against another $30 on cover prompts: the cost isn't the $30. It's the six weeks your book sits at a conversion rate you can't diagnose, because the one variable every browsing buyer sees is the one you settled on.
